Lucy Mills

Lucy is a Chartered Clinical Psychologist, and is registered with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC).  Lucy trained at the University of Hertfordshire where she completed training in 2010.  Prior to training, Lucy worked as an Assistant Psychologist in a number of NHS services in London.  Lucy now works part time in the NHS with adults with mental health problems, and part time in private practice.

Lucy is trained to draw on the theory and evidence base of different therapies, in order to understand clients' difficulties fully.  Lucy currently works mostly using a therapy called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).   ACT is an evidence based therapy which utilises skills such as mindfulness to help clients learn to manage their distressing experiences (such as painful thoughts or feelings) more effectively.  ACT also helps clients to clarify what is important to them (their values), and how working towards their values instead of away from their distress can lead to a more rewarding and fulfilling life.  ACT is particularly helpful for clients who have got "stuck" with their problems, and may have been struggling with depression, anxiety or relationship problems for a number of years.

At the start of therapy, Lucy will try to understand the problem, and to develop a shared understanding of how it started and what keeps it going.  This is is called a formulation and will be influenced by the client’s lived experience, as well as the Psychological research evidence about the types of problems the client is experiencing.  Once the goals for therapy have been agreed, the formulation helps to plan the therapy so that Lucy can tailor it to your needs.
